Calgary claims 4-1 victory in Game 3 in Saskatoon

Tanner Howe landed a couple of counter punches the Saskatoon Blades couldn’t recover from.

On Tuesday, Howe and his Calgary Hitmen found themselves locked in a 1-1 draw in the second period with the host Saskatoon Blades in Game 3 of a best-of-seven first round series in the WHL Playoffs. At the midway point of the frame, the Blades had a glorious chance to take the lead.

Blades 16-year-old associate player call up right-winger Kohen Lodge received a backdoor pass at the right side of the Calgary net. Lodge fired a puck to what appeared to be an empty cage only to be robbed by Hitmen netminder Anders Miller, who slid across the crease to deflect the puck away with his left skate.

Tanner Howe had one goal and one assist for the Hitmen.

Lodge had been playing with his hometown Red Deer Chiefs under-18 AAA team before joining the Blades for the remainder of the 2024-25 campaign. Had he scored on that backdoor opportunity, he would have given the Blades their first lead in any game to date of their current post-season series with the Hitmen.

Just moments later with 8:38 remaining in the second, the Hitmen jumped ahead 2-1, when Howe, who is the Hitmen’s start 19-year-old right-winger, put a backhand shot home from the front of the Saskatoon net.

Only 85 seconds later, Hitmen import defenceman Axel Hurtig passed the puck from the left corner in his own zone up the left wing boards to Howe, who was position right before the red-line.

Howe proceeded to redirect puck across the ice to Hitmen 17-year-old centre Ben Kindel, who was jetting into the Saskatoon zone along the right wing. Kindel zipped past the Blades defence on the outside, cut across the front of the Saskatoon net and put home a backhand shot to give Calgary a 3-1 advantage.

The Hitmen would cruise from that point to claim a 4-1 victory to disappoint most of the 5,206 spectators in attendance at the SaskTel Centre. With the win, Calgary takes a 3-0 lead in the series.

The Hitmen will try to close the series out in Game 4 slated for 7 p.m. Wednesday at the SaskTel Centre.

The odds are very long that the Blades will be able to make a comeback winning four straight games. Since the WHL started in 1966-67, only three teams have rallied back from a 3-0 deficit in a best-of-seven series to claim the set.

Anders Miller made 20 saves for the Hitmen on Tuesday.

The Spokane Chiefs, who were guided by Mike Babcock as head coach, trailed the Portland Winterhawks 3-0 before rallying to take a first round series 4-3 in 1996. The Kelowna Rockets fell behind the Seattle Thunderbirds 3-0 in 2013 before rallying back to claim that first round series 4-3. The Blades fell behind the Red Deer Rebels 3-0 in an Eastern Conference semifinal series in 2023 and stormed back to take that series 4-3.

Out of the three games the Blades and Hitmen have collided in during the 2025 post-season, Tuesday’s contest was the best effort that was turned in by the Saskatoon side in the set.

The teams played through a fairly even opening frame with the Hitmen finishing the stanza with a lot of late pressure. With 53.2 seconds remaining in the frame, gritty Hitmen centre David Adaszynski tipped home a shot from captain Carson Wetsch to put the visitors up 1-0. Calgary had a 10-5 edge in shots on goal after 20 minutes thanks to their late offensive pressure.

The Blades came out with some jump in the second period. Just 2:31 into the frame, import rookie left-winger David Lewandowski, who turned 18-years-old in February, blew home a power-play goal from the right faceoff dot to even the score at 1-1.

Following Lewandowski’s goal, Blades star right-winger Tyler Parr, who turned 20-years-old in January, was denied in close by Miller. That set the stage for the robbery Miller made on Lodge and the Hitmen goals that followed from Howe and Kindel that gave the visitors a 3-1 advantage.

The Blades outshot the Hitmen 10-8 in the second period, while Calgary had the edge in total shots on goal 18-15 after 40 minutes.

The third period was controlled by the Hitmen, who held a 12-6 edge in shots on goal for the frame.

Hitmen star 20-year-old right-winger Connor Hvidston put to bed the competitive part of Tuesday’s contest scoring with 8:27 remaining in the third to push the Calgary lead out to 4-1. Hvidston had the puck in close in front of the Saskatoon net and put a shot past a Blades defenceman to the top left corner of the goal for his first of the post-season.

Evan Gardner turned away 26 shots to take the setback in net for the Blades. Miller stopped 20 shots to pick up the win in goal for the Hitmen.

The Blades were without 20-year-old left-winger Tanner Scott for a third straight post-season game with an upper body injury.

Scott last suited up in the Blades last regular season contest when they fell 4-3 to the Raiders in Prince Albert on March 22.

For the first three games of the post-season, Calgary has been without the services of star overage netminder Daniel Hauser, who holds the WHL record for career regular season goaltending victories at 123. Hauser is out day-to-day with a lower body injury.

Eric Tu, who is a 16-year-old rookie, is serving as Calgary’s backup netminder.

The Hitmen entered the series having finished third overall in the WHL with a 45-17-3-3 record. They were also rated ninth in the final CHL Top 10 rankings that were released on March 25.

The Blades finished sixth overall in the Eastern Conference standings with a 37-23-4-4 mark. They enter the WHL Playoffs with the second youngest roster out of the 16 teams that are playing in the circuit’s post-season with an average age of 17.9 years on their roster.

A year ago, the Blades entered the playoffs having topped the WHL standings with a 50-13-2-3 mark and were loaded with a lot of star veterans. They advanced to the Eastern Conference Championship series where they fell 3-2 in overtime in Game 7 at the SaskTel Centre to the eventual WHL champion Moose Jaw Warriors.

The 2024-25 campaign ended up being a reload season for the Blades, who traded a number of veteran stars before the WHL’s trade deadline back on January 9 acquiring needed draft capital and younger players. Even with those moves, the Blades still comfortably landed in a position to qualify for the WHL Playoffs.

Now, they will need a major effort on Wednesday in order to continue to be part of the WHL post-season.

Defence, goaltending come up big for Blades

The Saskatoon Blades lived out the cliché that defence and goaltending wins hockey games.

On Friday night at the SaskTel Centre, the Blades young blue-line came up big on offence. Four different players on the backend had single goals to help Saskatoon down the powerhouse Calgary Hitmen 6-3 before a supportive crowd of 4,071 spectators that braved fictional planet Hoth like temperatures to attend the WHL regular season contest.

Out of the Blades defenders, sturdy standout 20-year-old veteran Grayden Siepmann had the biggest night recording one goal, two assists and a plus-one rating in the plus-minus department. Sophomore defenceman Jack Kachkowski, who turned 18-years-old in January, 17-year-old rookie blue-liner Isaac Poll and fellow rookie rearguard Jordan Martin, who turned 18-years-old in January, all picked up singles for Saskatoon.

Grayden Siepmann had one goal and two assists for the Blades.

Veteran netminder Ethan McCallum had a spectacular outing stopping 39 shots to pick up the victory in goal for the host side.

The win allowed the Blades to improve to 28-17-3-3 to keep pace in the race for first place in the WHL’s East Division. Their 62 standings points equals the total of their archrivals the Prince Albert Raiders (29-18-3-1), but the Raiders hold the standings tiebreaker due to having more wins. The Brandon Wheat Kings (27-16-4-3) sit one point back of both the Raiders and Blades with one game in hand.

The Hitmen came out of the gates on fire outshooting the Blades 7-1, and they broke through on the scoreboard just 3:33 into the opening frame. Hitmen 20-year-old star centre Connor Hvidston got the puck in front of the Saskatoon net off a positive bounce and roofed his 16^th tally of the season to the top left corner of the net to put the visitors up 1-0.

The Blades got their wheels going and evened score 1-1 on the power play at the 8:36 mark of the first on a goal from Siepmann. Siepmann fired home a point shot for the equalizer with the man advantage.

Saskatoon took a 2-1 lead at the 7:34 mark of the second, when breakout 16-year-old rookie centre Cooper Williams wired home his 16^th marker of the campaign.

The Hitmen proceeded to even the score at 2-2 at the 10:40 mark of the second. Working in the Saskatoon zone, Hitmen 20-year-old offensive-defenceman Kalem Parker had the puck on the icing line to the right side of the Saskatoon net. He banked home the puck off McCallum’s stick into the Saskatoon net to force a tie game.

Jack Kachkowski had a goal for the Blades on Friday.

Just 11 seconds later, Hitmen standout 18-year-old right-winger Carson Wetsch thought he scored from the front of the Saskatoon net to put his side ahead, but the play continued. The officials from the timekeeper’s booth blew the play down seconds later for a video review.

The review showed Wetsch’s shot just crossed the goal line of that Saskatoon net, and the officials ruled a goal for Wetsch to officially put the Hitmen ahead 3-2.

As quickly as the momentum swung to the Hitmen, it swung back just as quickly to the Blades.

With 3:23 remaining in the second, Kachkowski wired home a shot from the top of the left faceoff circle to the top right corner of the Calgary goal to even the score at 3-3. 

Isaac Poll had the Blades fourth goal on Friday.

The tally was Kachkowski’s first goal as a member of the Blades having been acquired in a trade on January 6.

The Blades proceeded to go ahead 4-3 with 1:32 remaining in the second when rookie 17-year-old defenceman Isaac Poll slipped home a shot from the point through a screen for his second marker of the season.

Just past the midway point of the third, Martin jetted down the right wing into the Calgary zone and ripped a shot from the right faceoff dot to the top left corner of the Calgary net to push the Blades lead out to 5-3.

Blades 19-year-old left-winger Rowan Calvert sealed the victory scoring on the power play during a net scramble with 4:25 remaining in the third.

Calvert’s tally was his 21^st goal on the season and 16^th marker on the power play.

Both Williams and Calvert each finished recording one goal and one assist for the Blades. Hvidston finished with one goal and one assist for Calgary. Daniel Hauser turned away 24 shots to take the setback in net for the Hitmen.

With the setback, the Hitmen fell to 33-14-3-2 to remain three points back of the idle Medicine Hat Tigers (35-16-3-1) for first place in the Eastern Conference. The Hitmen have three games in hand on the Tigers.

Due to the Lethbridge Hurricanes downing the visiting Regina Pats 6-5 in overtime, the Hurricanes improve to 34-16-2-1 and equal the Hitmen with 71 standings points. 

The Blades celebrate their victory on Friday night.

The Hurricanes hold second in the Eastern Conference due to having more wins than the Hitmen, but Calgary has one game in hand on Lethbridge.

The Blades head on the road on Saturday to Swift Current to take on the 27-22-1-1 Broncos (7 p.m., InnovationPlex).

The Hitmen also get back at it on Saturday traveling to Prince Albert to take the Raiders (7 p.m., Art Hauser Centre).

Going forward, the Blades are hoping their young back end and McCallum can keep delivering big games. If that happens, Saskatoon can likely deliver a few more surprises as the WHL campaign continues.

Raiders surge past Broncos 6-1, other notes

A four-goal knockout shot in the third period allowed the Prince Albert Raiders to put away the Swift Current Broncos.

On Friday night at the Art Hauser Centre, the host Raiders took a 2-1 lead into the third period and piled up four goals in the third to surge past the visiting Broncos 6-1 to the delight of the 2,555 spectators in attendance. The win allowed the Raiders to improve to 29-18-3-1 and hold a slim edge for first place in the WHL’s East Division.

The Raiders have the same amount of standings points as the Saskatoon Blades (28-17-3-3) at 62, but Prince Albert holds the standings tiebreaker due to having more wins. The Brandon Wheat Kings (27-16-4-3) sit one point back of both the Raiders and Blades with a game in hand on both clubs.

Star defenceman Lukas Dragicevic opened the game’s scoring netting his 13^th of the season at the 4:01 mark of the opening frame ripping home a midrange shot from the left faceoff circle.

Tomas Mrsic had one goal and two assists for the Raiders.

With 5.8 seconds remaining in the first, Raiders 20-year-old left-winger Niall Crocker potted a power-play goal from the front of the Swift Current net to put the host side up 2-0.

In the second, Broncos 20-year-old centre Carlin Dezainde wired home a shot to the top right corner of the Prince Albert net from the front of the goal to cut the Raiders lead to 2-1. Dezainde converted a beauty setup pass from 19-year-old left-winger Rylan Gould from the left corner of the Prince Albert zone.

The Raiders opened the flood gates in the third. Tomas Mrsic, who is the team’s star 18-year-old left-winger, netted his 31^st goal of the campaign to push the Raiders edge out to 3-1. Brayden Dube picked up his 24^th goal of the season with his club working on the power play to give the Prince Albert side a 4-1 advantage.

Raiders captain Justice Christensen scored once at even strength and once on the power play to round out the 6-1 final score in Prince Albert’s favour. Christensen now had 18 goals on the campaign.

Dragicevic and Mrsic each finished with one goal and two assists for Prince Albert.

Max Hildebrand stopped 31 shots to pick up the win in goal for the Raiders. Joey Rocha turned away 33 shots to take the setback in net for the Broncos (27-22-1-1).

The Broncos return home on Saturday to host the Saskatoon Blades (7 p.m., InnovationPlex).

The Raiders also get back at it on Saturday as they host the Calgary Hitmen (7 p.m., Art Hauser Centre).

• On Friday in Lethbridge, veteran centre Shane Smith scored at the 1:19 mark of overtime to deliver the host Hurricanes to a 6-5 victory over the Regina Pats. Hurricanes 19-year-old import right-winger Leo Braillard scored with 6.9 seconds remaining in the third period to force a 5-5 tie and overtime.
• On Friday in Kamloops, netminder Logan Edmonstone made 35 saves to backstop the host Blazers to a 3-1 victory over the Kelowna Rockets. Conner Radke, who is an 18-year-old right-winger, scored the winning goal for the Blazers in the second period. The win allowed Blazers head coach and general manager Shaun Clouston to pick up his 583^rd career WHL regular season head coach victory. He moves one win ahead of Marc Habscheid, who is best known for guiding the Rockets and Prince Albert Raiders as head coach, for fifth all-time on the WHL’s career head coaching wins list.
• On Friday in Victoria, the host Royals won their sixth in a row downing the visiting Vancouver Giants 5-2. Royals 19-year-old star left-winger Teydon Trembecky had two goals and two assists in the win. Victoria improved its B.C. Division leading record to 32-14-3-5.
• Also on Friday in the WHL, the Brandon Wheat Kings doubled up the Moose Jaw Warriors 6-3; the Everett Silvertips slipped past the Prince George Cougars 3-1; the Red Deer Rebels downed the Edmonton Oil Kings 3-1; the Tri-City Americans edged the Spokane Chiefs 5-4 after a tiebreaking shootout; and the Portland Winterhawks edged the Wenatchee Wild 6-5 in overtime.
• On Tuesday, Cami Kepke, who is the WHL’s manager of communications and content, put together a great story on Manny Viveiros rediscovering his love for hockey after battling two cancer diagnosis and depression. Viveiros was a legendary defenceman on the Prince Albert Raiders squad that won the WHL title and the Memorial Cup as CHL champions in 1985. He guided the Swift Current Broncos to a WHL championship as head coach in 2017-18, and he currently serves as the head coach of the Vancouver Giants. Raiders grit and perseverance delivers 4-3 victory

PRINCE ALBERT, Sask. – Head coach Jeff Truitt appreciated the battle of his Prince Albert Raiders.

On Friday night playing before 2,432 spectators at the Art Hauser Centre, the Raiders built a 3-0 lead on the visiting Calgary Hitmen and carried a 3-1 advantage into the third period. The Hitmen evened the score at 3-3 in the third, but the Raiders ensured the Calgary comeback was not to be.

With 4:08 remaining in the third period, Raiders 20-year-old standout right-winger Niall Crocker came up with one is his specialties. He banged home a gritty power-play goal from the front of the Calgary net on a four-on-three advantage to ultimately deliver the Raiders to a 4-3 victory.

“I really liked our compete,” said Truitt. “I thought that we skated real well.

“I thought that we were on pucks. I thought that we carried the speed quite a bit. I like a lot about our game and our physicality from time to time.

“We’re not going to get pushed around, and we showed that here tonight. It was kind of a team effort that way. We had to grind her out under some weird conditions in the third period and got her done.”

Raiders captain Justice Christensen opened the game’s scoring firing home a shot from the left point at the 9:56 mark of the opening frame. With Friday’s contest being the Raiders Toque and Teddy Bear Toss night, stuffed animals and mitts rained down on to the Art Hauser Centre’s ice surface after Christensen’s tally.

The players and off-ice staffers along with the game’s linesmen made sure the clean up was completed in rapid order.

The Hitmen got into penalty trouble inside the final 92 seconds of the opening frame. First, they got unsettled after 19-year-old star offensive-defenceman Carter Yakemchuk was hit by Raiders 19-year-old centre Harrison Lodewyk in the right corner of the Calgary zone.

The Hitmen coaching staff argued loudly from the bench with the officials for a penalty for hitting from behind, and no infraction was called. Just 18 seconds later, Hitmen 20-year-old import left-winger Max Muranov forearm hit Raiders 16-year-old rookie defenceman Daxon Rudolph in the Calgary zone starting a big scrum. The Raiders came away with a power play with Muranov being given an interference minor making the difference in how the penalties were sorted out.

With 23.2 seconds remaining in the first, Hitmen star 20-year-old defenceman Kalem Parker was given a roughing minor to give the Raiders a two-man advantage for 69 seconds.

Just 33 seconds into second working that two-man advantage, Raiders star offensive-defenceman Lukas Dragicevic wired home a power-play goal from the left point to push the host side’s edge out to 2-0. For Dragicevic, that was his first goal since he tallied once in a 6-4 loss to the Royals in Victoria back on October 18.

His tally on Friday came on a Raiders power play that entered the day’s action leading the WHL with a 28.3 per cent success rate.

“It feels good,” said Dragicevic, who has two goals and 26 assists in 22 games with the Raiders this season. “Obviously, the power play has been really good this year.

“It just fits that I got it on the power play. I play with good players on that line. They set me up pretty good, and I just had to do the rest.”

At the 4:07 mark of the second, the Hitmen gave the puck away to Raiders 20-year-old right-winger Niall Crocker. Crocker got the puck to import left-winger Krzysztof Macias, who wired home a mid-range shot to give Prince Albert a 3-0 advantage.

The Hitmen stopped the bleeding at the 7:20 mark of the second when 19-year-old centre David Adaszynski sent home a mid-range off-speed shot through a screen for a goal to cut the Raiders lead to 3-1.

With 10:02 remaining in the second working on a power play, Hitmen star 19-year-old left-winger Tanner Howe thought he scored a goal during a mad scramble. The officials first called the play a goal, proceeded to have a conference over the call and waved the tally off on the ice.

The Hitmen thought they had another goal with 3:53 remaining in the second with a shot coming off the stick of captain Carson Wetsch. That goal was waved off as Hitmen 17-year-old centre Ben Kindel was given a minor penalty for goaltender interference.

Just 62 seconds into the third, Hitmen 20-year-old star centre Connor Hvidston snuck a turnaround shot past Raiders 18-year-old netminder Dimitri Fortin to further trim the host side’s edge to 3-2.

The Hitmen evened the score a 3-3 with 5:21 remaining in third on a power-play goal from star 19-year-old right-winger Oliver Tulk. 

Tulk tipped home a puck from the front of the Prince Albert net that came from a pass by Wetsch.

That set the scene for Crocker to come through with the winning tally.

Dimitri Fortin made 39 saves in goal for the Raiders.

“We don’t give up,” said Dragicevic. “Maybe at the start of the year that is something that would have done, but we’ve grown as a team.

“We’ve grown as individuals. We knew we were going to get one on that power play. Our power play is too good to get stopped there.

“Crocks (Crocker) obviously banged that one home. It was a couple of passes before that one that led to that, and it was a nice goal.”

Fortin stopped 39 shots to pick up the win in goal for the Raiders (12-9-3). Anders Miller turned away 27 shots to take the setback in net for the Hitmen (13-9-3-1).

Truitt has been pleased with how solid Fortin has been for the Raiders after joining the club in a trade with the Moose Jaw Warriors on November 27.

“Since he has come in, he has been calm and cool,” said Truitt. “He has just done his job.

“He has made some key saves, but he hasn’t had to make many circus saves here. He has been pretty good. The guys in front of him have been good as well, but he has been solid.”

The Hitmen return to action on Saturday when they travel to Saskatoon to take on the 17-6-1-2 Blades (7 p.m., SaskTel Centre).

Lakovic delivers Warriors OT win, 2-0 series lead on Wheaties

On Saturday night, the Warriors found themselves locked in a 4-4 draw in overtime taking on the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings in Game 2 of a first round series in the WHL Playoffs between the two sides. Just 2:15 into the extra session, Warriors 19-year-old right-winger Rilen Kovacevic stole the puck from a Wheat Kings defenceman in the left corner of the Brandon zone.

Kovacevic backhanded a pass to the front of the Brandon net to Lakovic. The 17-year-old sophomore left-winger made no mistake burying the overtime winner to deliver the Warriors to a 5-4 victory before an elated 3,557 spectators at the Moose Jaw Events Centre.

The win allowed the Warriors to take a 2-0 series lead in the best-of-seven set. Moose Jaw claimed Game 1 on home ice Friday by a 7-4 score.

In Saturday’s clash, Warriors star centre Brayden Yager gave the host side a 1-0 lead in the opening frame. Later on in the first, Wheat Kings import centre Dominik Petr and 17-year-old centre Roger McQueen scored goals six second apart from each other to give the visitors a 2-1 advantage.

With 3:42 remaining in the first, Warriors star 20-year-old centre Atley Calvert potted a short-handed goal to even the score at 2-2.

In the second, Wheat Kings 19-year-old Rylen Roersma tallied a short-handed marker and McQueen potted his second of the contest to give Brandon a 4-2 advantage.

Inside the final two minutes of the second, the Warriors scored two goals 23 seconds apart coming from the sticks of star centre Matthew Savoie and left-winger Pavel McKenzie to even the score at 4-4.

The two sides played through a scoreless third period leading up to Lakovic’s winner. The Wheat Kings got the first four shots on goal in overtime before Lakovic tallied on Moose Jaw’s first shot on net of the extra frame.

Jackson Unger stopped 30 shots to pick up the win in goal for the Warriors. Carson Bjarnason turned away 34 shots to take the setback in net for the Wheat Kings.

Calvert collected a pair of assists to go with his goal putting up a three-point night for the Warriors. Savoie had an assist to go with his goal. Warriors 20-year-old defenceman Brenton Lucas picked up a pair of assists in the win.

Roersma had an assist to go with his goal for the Wheat Kings.

The series now shifts to Brandon for Games 3 and 4 on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively for a 7 p.m. local start time on both nights at Westoba Place.

The Warriors finished second overall in the WHL’s Eastern Conference in the regular season with a 44-21-0-3 mark. They are the third seed in the conference for the first round of the playoffs due to not finishing first in a division. The Wheat Kings placed sixth in the Eastern Conference with a 33-28-6-1 record.

Broncos outlast Hurricanes 4-3 in Game 2

The Swift Current Broncos are showing early signs that they might be giving their fans another spring to remember.

On Saturday before a sellout crowd of 2,890 spectators at the InnovationPlex, the host Broncos took a 4-3 thriller over the Lethbridge Hurricanes in Game 2 of a best-of-seven first round series in the WHL Playoffs between the two sides. With the win, the Broncos take a 2-0 lead in the set. Swift Current took Game 1 of the series 3-0 win on home ice on Friday.

In Saturday’s encounter between the two sides, the Hurricanes took a 1-0 lead early in the first period on a goal by 18-year-old right-winger Leo Braillard.

The visitors held their lead until the 14:24 mark of the second when Broncos star left-winger Josh Filmon tallied on the power play to even the score at 1-1.

Just under three minutes later, Hurricanes 20-year-old centre Sean Tschigerl popped home his first of the post-season to give the visitors a 2-1 edge heading into the second intermission.

At the 2:38 mark of the third, Broncos 20-year-old defenceman Ryan McCleary netted the equalizer that forced a 2-2 tie. Just under three minutes later, Broncos star 19-year-old right-winger Connor Hvidston scored on the power-play to put the host side in front 3-2.

The Broncos then appeared to have iced the game when star centre Conor Geekie scored into an empty-net with 2:14 remaining in the third to push the host’s advantage out to 4-2. Just four seconds later, Hayden Pakkala scored for the Hurricanes to cut the Broncos lead to 4-3.

The Hurricanes weren’t able to find the equalizer after that.

Reid Dyck made 29 saves to pick up the win in goal for the Broncos. Harrison Meneghin turned away 32-of-35 shot to take the setback in net for the Hurricanes.

Left-winger Luke Mistelbacker had a pair of helpers for Swift Current.

The Broncos are making their first appearance in the WHL Playoffs since their WHL championship winning season in 2018. They topped the Central Division this season posting a 40-22-4-2 mark.

The Hurricanes finished seventh in the WHL’s Eastern Conference with a 33-28-7 record.

The series now shifts to Lethbridge for Game 3 and 4 on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively to be held at 7 p.m. local time both nights at the Enmax Centre.

McKenna powers Tigers past Rebels, other notes

Gavin McKenna had a goal and two assists for the Tigers.

Gavin McKenna broke out the biggest post-season outing of his young WHL career to power his Medicine Hat Tigers to a big rebound win.

On Saturday night, the Tigers star 16-year-old rookie left-winger scored 21 seconds into Game 2 of the Tigers first round series against the Red Deer Rebels. McKenna picked up assists on the Tigers two goals in the second frame as they down the visiting Rebels 3-1 before an appreciative crowd of 4,175 spectators at Co-op Place.

The win allows the Tigers to even the best-of-seven series with the Rebels at 1-1. In Game 1 at Co-op Place on Friday, the Tigers jumped out to 4-0 only to see the Rebels rally back and claim a 5-4 victory in double overtime.

In Game 2 on Saturday, McKenna gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead scoring 21 seconds into the game potting a rebound at the right side of the Rebels net from a shot taken by linemate Hunter St. Martin.

At the 9:22 mark of the second, McKenna and Tigers 18-year-old star left-winger Andrew Basha combined to set up 18-year-old offensive-defenceman Reid Andresen for his first goal of the post-season to push Medicine Hat’s advantage out to 2-0.

Working on the power play with 4:32 remaining in the second, Basha and McKenna combined to set up sophomore star centre Cayden Lindstrom, who turned 18-years-old in February, for his first of the playoffs. Lindstrom’s tally pushed the Tigers lead out to 3-0 going into the second intermission.

After 40 minutes, the Tigers held their 3-0 edge while building a 23-13 advantage in shots on goal.

The Rebels came with a big push back in the third holding an 18-3 edge in shots on goal for the frame. The visitors were only able to get one goal coming from the stick of sophomore centre Ollie Josephson coming at the 6:32 mark of the period.

Zach Zahara stopped 30 shots to pick up the win in goal for the Tigers. Chase Wutzke turned away 23 shots to take the setback in net for the Rebels.

As a rookie, McKenna led the Tigers in regular season scoring with 97 points coming off 34 goals and 63 assists. His 97 points are a Tigers team record for most points scored in one season by a 16-year-old.

He finished 12^th in the WHL’s scoring race. Due to being born in late December, McKenna isn’t eligible for the NHL Entry Draft until 2026.

The Tigers finished fourth overall in the WHL’s Eastern Conference in the regular season with a 37-23-6-2 mark. The Rebels were fifth overall in the conference with a 33-26-3-6 record.

The series between the Tigers and Rebels now shifts to Red Deer for Games 3 and 4 on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively at 7 p.m. both nights at the Peavey Mart Centrium.

• On Saturday in Prince George, centre Riley Heidt had three assists as his host Cougars downed the Spokane Chiefs 7-4 in Game 2 of their first round series. Layton Feist scored twice for the Chiefs. The Cougars, who finished second overall in the WHL regular season with a 49-15-1-3 mark, lead the series 2-0.
• On Saturday in Portland, the host Winterhawks dumped the Victoria Royals 5-1 in Game 2 of their first round series. James Stefan had a pair of goals and an assist for the Winterhawks, while Gabe Klassen picked up three assists in the win. The Winterhawks, who finished third overall in the WHL’s regular season standings with a 48-15-4-1 mark, lead the series 2-0.
• On Saturday in Everett, the host Silvertips got a pair of goals from Austin Roest to down the Vancouver Giants 2-1 in Game 2 of their first round series. Brett Mirwald made 53 saves taking the setback in goal for the Giants. The best-of-seven series between these two clubs is tied 1-1.
• On Saturday in Wenatchee, the host Wild fell 3-1 to the Kelowna Rockets in Game 2 of their first round series. Caden Price picked up assists on all three goals for the Rockets. The best-of-seven series between these two squads is tied 1-1.
• On Friday, the WHL announced Brandon Wheat Kings 19-year-old physical left-winger Matt Henry has been suspended eight games for a first-time violation of the CHL’s Anti-Doping Policy. Henry appeared in 37 regular season games for the Wheat Kings this season collecting one assist and 100 penalty minutes.
